It has a unique perspective on writing and the writing life and is told with a lot of humor and verve. The author reached out to UNMP after getting the rights back for her book when UPNE went out of business. I'm now working with her on an updated and expanded edition of the book, which will be an excellent addition to UNMP's growing writing guide list. Cole is very excited to have an opportunity to update and expand the book and see it back in print. Good Naked covers a lot of territory and focuses on accentuating the positive among the work and imploding misconceptions and popular writing myths. Cole uses a lot of humor in her books and that mechanism pairs nicely with her positive attitude and good advice. The book's title comes from Cole's advice to share early drafts-a person is exposing their creative process in all its glory. Through a combination of practical wisdom and storytelling, she addresses some of the most common challenges writers face (such as how to start and writer's block) and offers effective strategies to get a person started and to keep them motivated. She implodes writer's myths, counterproductive strategies, and energy-draining habits that undermine a writer's confidence and creativity. From Cole's perspective, the happy ending for a writer comes from not just writing, but writing more and writing well, with that confidence and creativity intact. This book is ideal for anyone from beginner to published author-anyone who has ever experienced dread at any stage of the creative process. It's an intelligent, funny, and generous guide that makes the writer feel as though she has a cheerleader and mentor on her side. Cole and I have had several conversations about how to revise and expand this book, and our plans include updating each existing chapter with new examples and new information and looking for subjects that either ought to be a stand-alone chapter or that could be pulled out and highlighted in a textbox; adding writing prompts/journal prompts for a minimum of two-thirds of the chapters in the book ( only three prompts appear in the original book) in order to make the book more interactive by giving readers a way to engage further with the topics covered in each chapter; including updated versions of the original three comics and at least two additional comics in the book; and including at least three brand-new chapters, one on rejections, one on finding peace with a creative work after it's been published and you decide it still needed work, and one on connecting with your material rather than doing what Cole calls "slumming," or writing about what you think is "hot" rather than what you know or what you're actually interested in learning about. This new edition of this book will do just as well as the first. The material will appeal both to people who are familiar with the first edition and readers discovering the book for the first time. Cole is extremely active as a teacher and a lecturer, so she has a wide network of people to share the book with. This is going to be an excellent book to have on UNMP's list"-- ‡cProvided by publisher.
